My club has been putting off sanding the floor for some reason or the other, as a result of which the court has become quite slippery. What is the best way to play on such floors? What modifications should one make to the footwork to minimise the slipping, and reducing chances of injury?

P.S. Shawn, don't be in a hurry to write the obituary for this forum. Give it time to build up a head of steam!

Wear more eyewear so you don't slip and fall onto the ball with your eye... Also jump and down lightly on the T, bouncing on the top of your feet. Make sure you don't overbalance on your shots. Do the ghosting routine Palmer does with the medicine ball which helps his balance.

Maybe try damp-mopping the floor?

Is the floor varnished or sealed somehow? My friend had a court in his house that had a varnished floor... the ball would skid so bad and be almost unreturnable if you crushed it low. We played so much on that court that I think it helped our games as we knew that we couldn't set each other up to do that. Then he sanded the court and it was normal again. But we didn't have much of a problem with slipping though... we were like Ross Norman, slipping just doesn't happen.

If you play at public courts the courts are usually dirty cos people wear their outdoor shoes on them. Same with university courts. Best to try to mop them yourself before you play.

At my old club, we needed a new big/wide mop cos the old one was no good. Since most of the club executive are government workers, for some reason it took a year to have a $20 mop approved. For that year, the courts weren't cleaned properly but it was big news in the newsletter when the $20 mop was approved to be purchased. Very Happy
