Despite some efforts in the open and via Private Message, I am cautiously optimistic but ever guarded re: culture, tone here on the Forum

Please humour me as I babble about my views concerning on-line Forums.

I believe in:
- dialogue
- discussion
- diversity of opinions
- interplay of differing, divergent opinions
- healthy banter
- friendly/playful teasing (if done in the right spirit and perhaps if you have developed that type of rapport with a particular poster)
- the value, benefit of the on-line Forum community self-policing, using moralsuasion to keep this place welcoming and vibrant
- polls being conducted on Homepage (send me your ideas)
- special guests making appearances on the Forum and in other cool web delivery methods
- some topics, discussion being done via Private Message or e-mail rather than on the Forum threads

RE: Censorship, I believe in avoiding censorship at all costs unless it is based on:
- legal, moral or ethical reasons
- protecting or nurturing the civility, atmosphere within the Forum (not because I don't like what some writes about me, the site or squash special interest groups)
- people or businesses going too far in promoting their products or services, if done respectfully (and squash related) and in a spirit of informing or sharing info or news

I actually think it can be a good thing for the SQuash360 Forum to accept and indeed welcome discussion about and links to other sites, businesses, etc. I believe it speaks to my values as a person and as a website that truly believes and shows with its actions and decisions that we want to:
1. promote and cover the game 360 degrees
2. foster discussion, debate and idea sharing ... not all info, ideas, news is going to be on squash360.com ... so why shouldn't we let you share stuff found on other sites with others
3. become one of the destinations for all squash enthusiasts, not at the exclusion of others
4. work with, co-operate and collaborate with others in the game for shared and collective success and overall health of the sport, not just be protective of "our piece of the pie" .... lets grow the pie together

In some ways I view this on-line forum as our great big livingroom or pub, and in some ways I am the host. As the host, I want people to be safe, feel welcome and to have a good time. I want people to mix, have fun and leave feeling they met some good people, made new friends, had a pleasant time and want to come back again. At the same time, if one of my guests is being boorish, maybe drinks too much, becomes abusive and starts wrecking the evening for everyone ... I need to pull them aside, have a discussion and hope things change, if not ... and not to be meanspirited, I might have to ask them to leave so they don't spoil things for everyone else. I don't want to do this, but as a good host, its my responsibility and I think the other people in the livingroom will appreciate it and the person acting out of line, in the light of day (and perhaps despite the hangover) will understand.

Conversely, I don't have to like everyone in the livingroom, I don't have to agree with what they have to say or how they say it, I can go and talk to someone else and tune them out (not read what they write).

Let me be clear, I will give people and ideas lattitude, but I will not allow individuals to degrade the discussion and overall tone of this Forum with their:
- abusive language
- verbal attack riticisizing the person, rather than addressing their ideas

Thanks for listening to my rambing and thanks for coming to our livingroom and helping to make it a positive, constructive, welcoming place.

Shawn

Dear Shawn and everybody involved in squash360 site,

First of all - congratulations for your efforts to create another exciting and goodlooking squash related website.

Second of all - answering your Forum Romanum appeal:
I dare to start with quote:

It is quite shameful for you to exit as you choose... quite cowardly. If you have a family, I wish them good luck for you are not a man...

I bet your wife closes her eyes when she kisses you Corkscrew.

So, I will leave it without ANY comments, right? Do you expect people to answer this kind of junk? I am sorry, I am off in this case. Guys are just cruising for bruising without any sense. They love to show off with their "knowledge" and they offend people who dare to disagree.

Last but not least - With due respect to your website, maybe THE FORUM is not needed Smile

P.S. I am happy to read that you won't allow verbal attacks criticizing the poster. In that light, those guys should be already sent to principal.

As I indicated to people via Private Message ... comments like this are not in the spirit of the Forum we are trying to nurture in here. At the very least, you have my apologies Corkscrew and my assurance that comments such as these will not be tolerated.

RE: Forum not being needed, purely subjective I guess. It will take some time to build, like any Forum, but believe it can and will offer something different to COMPLEMENT what is available at www.squashsite.co.uk for instance.

I'm just encouraged by your approach, not deleting posts here and there, just because they mention another website

its this kind of openenss that will set you apart from other sites uh hum squashsite.co.uk ahhhh thats so liberating to be able to write that address without second thought or worries of deletions, snide comments from moderator

the word will get out many people dont like the censorship and tone of he who must not be named who only think bout themselves they are too small minded to think of the bigger picture

Well why did you have to be ##### and #####? And I don't bite the heads off anyone who disagrees unless it's a personal attack at me.. then I will. ## actually Bendi I ask if someone says something that upsets you, you rise above and turn the other cheek, calmer heads must prevail if you want to remain in here ###

### please note everyone, I gave Bendi a private message giving him the opportunity to edit his post, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hate censoring or editing posts, but want to try and instill some civility in here for the enjoyment of all ###

This is a fantastic site. Steve seems pretty mad about the whole thing and blocked everyone from his forum the over day for a few hours simply cos we were all writing how good 360 is and how they should join up. Clearly his interests are more important then the overall grow off squash.

Don't be nieve people all sites including this one have to tackle the vexed question of having their competition promoted on their own forum, it happens on every forum and all I have seen have at times struggled with the conflict, this site I am sure will too have its moments.
Added to that I suspect general moderation here will be tougher than other sites within our sport, so I suggest you ease up on blowing the bugle.

squash 360 the way you edited my post confused even me and I wrote it! I couldn't tell which parts I wrote. And why did you edit out the words bait me? Those aren't really offensive words where I'm from..
